‘It’s not bad to be single’: New video by AFRO

Afro videoIn April, AFRO-Hong Kong released a video titled It’s not bad to be single, in which Sum, a sex worker in Hong Kong, shares her story about working in the industry, her experiences with clients, and her struggles after she decided to get a divorce.

In the sex work industry, the term ‘docking’ refers to being able to quit when you find someone to marry. Like many other sex workers, Sum shared this aspiration. However, her husband disappeared after she lost her apartment and her savings to help pay his gambling debt, and she decided to file for divorce. In the video, Sum talks about her struggles after she got divorced, her feelings of loneliness, and the difficulty of not having anyone to talk to. This is why she eventually decided to return to sex work, where she can meet with old clients who care for her and accompany her when she feels lonely or sad.

At the end of the video, Sum is asked to share some encouraging words for other women who might be struggling like her. ‘After my marriage, I realised that I could also live a happy life on my own. If you have a boyfriend, treasure him, don’t fight. Even if you don’t have a boyfriend, no need to rush. Just let fate decide, there’s no need to rush’.
