Advocacy
The principles of consultation and participation are at the core of GAATW’s Advocacy Programme. As part of our commitment to participation, GAATW incorporates member organisations in advocacy through collaboration on advocacy statements and planning, in presentations at regional and international meetings and conferences, and ensuring opportunities to participate at key international events.

In partnership with our members, GAATW-IS engages in advocacy on priority issues at the regional and international level. We focus particularly on the UN Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), the Human Rights Council and the UNODC. GAATW’s international advocacy work has been facilitated by the Alliance successfully obtaining consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations in 2006.

GAATW has long played a significant role in international advocacy, for example GAATW’s Human Rights Standards in the Treatment of Trafficked Persons (1999) and the Human Rights and Trafficking in Persons (2000) were ground-breaking applications of human rights to the trafficking context and were instrumental in expanding the concept of trafficking in the UN Trafficking Protocol.
